The Barpali Days

This blog is the Facebook of Barpali which picturise its "life" and "culture". It was a "palli" or a village a century back where the all time great Oriya poet swabhaba kabi Gangadhar Meher had taken birth. Now this bustling little town is renowned world-over for the weaving of Sambalpuri ikat handloom fabrics. Agriculture is its prime economy. And when you happen to visit this little town don't miss to taste Chaul bara.

Rajib Lochan Hota : Glimpses of his early life

Much prior to India’s independence i.e. on 23rd March 1935 Rajib Lochan Hota was born at Sarangarh of the then Madhya Pradesh, which now comes under the geographical periphery of  Chattisgarh. His father was working in the revenue department of Govt. of Odisha as a Patuary or Amin, whose basic job was to measure the land. It was in the year 1954 he had shifted to Barpali in Odisha which then happened to be a tiny village. A year prior to the constitution of Republic of India that was in the year 1955 Rajiv  took admission in Intermediate at Gangadhar Meher College, Sambalpur. Over there he studied just for a year and even before completion of second year he got the job as a Resettlement Inspector. His basic job was to resettle people who were displaced on the construction of Hirakud Dam. When his father  shifted to Kamgaon of Bheden block of Bargarh district he joined Lower Primary School in Class 1. While wearing a half pant everyday he was walking to school. In fact then people were not alert about the role of education. Habitants of the entire village happen to be illiterates except one or two families. Since his father was a literate person so had realised the value of education that will play in the life of his children. From there they shifted to Lupursinga. On reaching Class 4th at Remunda for the first time he was taught English alphabets. He attended Class 6th at Larambha. In the year 1947 months before India's Independence they shifted to Dhuma of Sambalpur district. Rajiv Hota recalls Celebrating India's Independence in their school on the very day of August 15th, 1947. All the children carried flowers to their school and their teacher stuffed them in a Tiranga the National Flag of India. Rajib and his young school mates seldom knew what their teachers were doing, but were jubilant because they got gaja(dry sweet stuff) when the tricolor  flag was hoisted.

He recalls an incident of his childhood then when he was just eight years old and was a student of Class 3. One afternoon he had been to Mahanadi river to take a bath that was when there was a whirlwind on the riverbed. That young kid Rajib of short height may be three feet or so got submerged in the sand of the river upto his chest. That kid was fear struck and was helpless. He could not sought, because his mouth and nostrils were choked with the dry sand of the river. In the meanwhile a bull walked that was when Rajib caught hold of the tail of that beast without even fearing a bit. And that giant bull pulled out that kid from the depth of the sand.

It was in 1954 his father shifted to Barpali. From here Rajib went Sambalpur and joined Intermediate in Arts at Gangadhar Meher College, Sambalpur. Then GM College happened to be the premier Institute of higher education in the entire Western Odisha. He attended college while  boarded in the students hostel. On completion of 1st year of Intermediate he got a job with Govt. of Odisha as the Resettlement Inspector of Grade-II rank. He was  working at a handsome salary of 97(yes that was Ninety Seven) INR per month. That means on an average a day he was earning around 3 Rupees.  It is worth noting then 1 naya Paisa, 5 naya Paisa and 10 naya Paisa were in wide circulation. And carrying a One Rupee coin in the pocket happens to be a risky job. Indian Rupee has intrinsic value.

Dhanu jatra: An Effective Internship Platform for Youth of the locality

by: Dr Samarendra Nath Panda

Dhanu Jatra or Dhanu Yatra is the annual open air mythological celebration conducted at Bargarh of Odisha, India. This Hindu festival spread across 8 kms radius area around the Bargarh municipality, it is the world's largest open air theatre which finds a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The idea of Internship for the graduates of the locality in Dhanuyatra, a World famous 11-day open air mythological drama may not look usual, but may be considered as an out of box idea.  The objective is based on the recent technological transition, where the statement ‘change is the only constant’ holds true, as change is accelerating. The transition from typewriters to computers and landlines to mobile phones has been spread over two decades.  Futurist economist Prof Jeremy Rifkin highlighted the impact of the third industrial revolution resulting in emergence of new business models, intelligent technology and future of work and collaborative education through a survey report. The report  on "Skill Development for Industry 4.0" highlighted the "job polarisation" with decline in the mid-level, repetitive and rule based jobs and increase in demand for creative, design oriented high order skills. India will have to prepare itself to fully realise the economic opportunities of technological advancements and transform to create a quick demand led education system integrated with skill development. A collaborative effort from Government, industry and academia can certainly turn the challenge of Industry 4.0 into an opportunity.

The fourth industrial revolution that we are currently witnessing is being defined as the new age of automation, driven by exceptional technological advances. The pace of automation and its scope continues to grow exponentially. The implications on the global economy are manifold – changing nature of work, job roles being re-defined, a certain class of job roles becoming redundant leading to growth in new occupations and new roles. It also raises a whole host of questions. But the most important one is regarding the set of new skills that are needed in the future and how individuals should shape themselves for this future to remain relevant. So it is time to restructure the education system with a skill driven approach to create an employable human resource pool. This challenging scenario needs to be adapted by the policymakers, parents and students to prepare  them better  to appreciate opportunities as well as challenges in the near future. In this context the idea of Internship appears to be more relevant and appropriate.

Dhanuyatra provides the best platform for Internship for the undergraduate students owing to its diversified range of activities to organise this mega event. The devotees of Lord Krishna started the first “Divya Mahotsava Dhanuyatra” in 1870 Sakabda Pousa Sukla Pratipada Sombar (Monday) dated 12.01.1948 at 12:00 noon and ended on Pousa Purnami Sombar (Monday) dated 26.01.1948 at 9:00 am as per the official website. The date of commencement of festival and date of completion is decided as per the Hindu calendar that is Pausa Sukla Panchami to Pausa Purnima mostly during December - January. There are no written scripts for this act which depicts its uniqueness among the rest of the other plays. This is an Annual event managed by the District Administration under the leadership of Collector with the help of local people, social activists and different organisations of the town. The collaboration between people and administration reaffirms the strength of democratic system to face challenges of any magnitude.

In Dhanu Yatra the amazing aspect is the absence of any professional event management group. This is an event which involves planning in various areas like finance, law, revenue, general administration, transport, literature, hospitality, media management, public relation, stage management, performing art, drama, and music, sound, light and overall coordination. This event makes Bargarh Township as well as the Ambapali village an open air theatre with each and every individual of the locality being an artist. The activities are performed in various sites. The fundamental theme of  Dhanuyatra  mostly revolves around two central mythological characters Lord Krishna and King Kansa, so mostly it is considered a socio religious festival. But with time the festival can be viewed as a mega trade event as well as a tourist destination. The in-depth work done by various researchers on the various cultural aspects like Drama, Folk Dance, the concept of stage as per Natya shastra and many more put the festival in a different academic scale. Though it is a festival of 11 days, the various activities take place in a span of 60 to 90 days.  This dynamic evolutionary character of the festival creates space for Internship of UG and PG students of various subjects.

According to dictionary.com, an internship is defined as “any official or formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession”. The most important element of an internship is that they integrate classroom knowledge and theory with practical application and skills developed in professional or community settings. It gives the intern a real time experience to learn the desired profession, so that he or she can make the right decision to pursue his or her career in that area. Moreover the experience will enrich him or her to such an extent that he or she will be a confident individual with enhanced employability quotient for the competitive job market or professional sphere. The tough learning curve of challenging market scenarios for recent graduates will look simple to them.

The scope for internship can be identified only with complete study of organisational structure to carry out this mega event with a diverse range of activities. The complete organisational team operates through various committees to take care of the different activities in different sites. The organisational team of the event is an excellent composition of personalities of various walks of life along with people’s representatives of the district as an advisory panel. The entire District administration, eminent people and social organisations of the locality render their committed service under the chairmanship of district collector to make the festival a festival of unique character.  The various committees with their nature and function provide ample space for the students to pursue internships. The different committees namely Executive committee, Programme coordination committee, Reception committee, Hospitality committee, Rajdarbar committee, Rangmahal committee Cultural committee, Publicity committee, Website committee, Byelaw committee, Law & Order committee Land allotment committee, Artist advisory committee,  Gopapur committee Souvenir committee and Discipline committee.

Executive committee is the central coordination team which takes care of each and every department as well as activities and consists of eminent personalities along with a dynamic team of administrators.  This committee can provide the real time experience of   know-how of planning and policy making. They can understand the process to draw the outline of such a mega project along with the inner intricate dynamics of maintaining multiple equilibrium like people‘s expectation, statutory need, ideological opinion difference  etc. This will give them insight to know, to ascertain role and responsibility to the right person. At the same time this committee has to take a time bound approach to ensure completion of various assignments . They need to take care of the financial aspect of the event. The approximate budget of last year Dhanuyatra may be around 1.2 Crores out of which 10 lacs was government’s direct financial assistance. The financial planning involves revenue generation through various ways and means like land allotment for various trade activities along with allotment for other activities. The complete process is supposed to be transparent.  This has to be ensured through the right financial regulatory mechanism. Apart from that it needs to protect the business interest of the concerned traders as well as the convenience of crowd movement in the peak hour. The total foot fall during the event is expected to be 10 to 15 lac as per previous empirical calculation documented. In this regard law, commerce, economics graduates can work with the land allotment committee. The arrangement of trade events also involves  all sorts of transit arrangements of light, sound, fire extinguisher, CC TV, sheds  etc  in the exhibition area. This involves a complete integrated approach and planning where many students can participate as interns.

The centre stage of mythological and cultural activities is Rajdarbar and Rangmahal which are normally managed by two different committees.  These activities need planning and execution both in various dimensions. The stage designing is an artistic innovation assignment. The stage design is based on the view of a royal palace of a king and its darbar, for which in-depth knowledge of the mythological era is required along with latest technological art innovation. The complete stage management during performance is the real challenge because it is a blending of a formal meeting and a pure cultural programme. On these two stages Maharaja Kansa  carries out the complete range of activities of an ancient King. At the same time all the government officials visit the stage and a detailed account of developmental work along with awareness messages are provided to the audience as a part of the drama. The high profile dignitaries like Chief Minister, Central Ministers, State Ministers and other towering personalities of diverse fields also visit in various capacities. The complete protocol detail, management of time slots for those guests and their hospitality are managed with utmost care. This domain of operation provides a complete package for internship.

The arrangement of animals like elephant, camel, horse etc requires statutory work owing to various legal complications. The procedural details to make them available are nice for one to learn. Sometimes the required number of animals with a licence is difficult to get. The arrangement of around 150 cultural troops for the inaugural procession and three stage performances is one of the toughest challenges. Their travel details, time slot, accommodation etc are to be planned and executed with perfection. The expertise to scrutinise their performance is the best learning area as the interns will get an opportunity to work with renowned experienced minds of the field. That will expand their outlook in the respective field.  Apart from that a good quantum of idea is also required to understand the various forms of music and art. The selection of artists and their practice is another imperative area for the success of the festival for which an Artist advisory committee is there. In that committee distinguished dramatists, directors and people with ideas on the core theme of Dhanuyatra happen to be the members. The Gopapur committee takes care of the artist selection and all other aspects of Gopapur: the location where spirituality of rural India is best depicted.  Dhanuyatra is not only a mythological drama but also a drama to create social awareness and create space for social audit through it. The drama has to be performed by the professional artists as well as common men like officers, politicians, activists etc without script.  So a lot of innovation, acting skill and a strong background of current affairs is required to make it more appealing.

The student intern can learn many aspects of hospitality by working under the reception and hospitality committee. They are having the scope to learn the know-how of invitation of high profile protocol concerned guests and subsequently after getting confirmation the arrangements to be done  also require adequate procedural details. The scope in hospitality of domestic as well as foreign guests will improve their personality as well as personal network. The student interns who are interested to have their career in general or police administration, engineering, medical or any other wings will get firsthand experience of the delicate equilibrium of personal and   professional life of all those dynamic people of administration. They will be inspired by working under them. The youth will come closer to the administration which may provide a better opportunity to the administrators who in some way are the policy makers.

The growth of social media is playing a very significant role in promoting events along with print and electronic media. There is ample scope of career opportunity in this segment. The publicity work includes writing in different languages, designing of flex, small videos for promotion, using social media platforms, contacting Brand ambassadors and many more innovative modes of promotion of the festival at national and International level. Nowadays students are taking a lot of interest in all such works. So it will help them to think their leisure activities possess a lot of professional potential.  This division can promote the festival as a tourist destination also. The making and updating of the Dhanuyatra website is also a good project for internship of computer science students.

Dhanuyatra is a festival which is attracting many researchers to work in various aspects of the festival like evolution of the festival, mythological correlation with present day approach, drama form, environmental aspect or economic  impact. In this connection the souvenir is helping as a reference tool. The souvenir committee consists of many eminent personalities of the literary field. Articles with strong fundamental ideas from eminent writers usually find place in this. So the work of the editorial board is also a challenging one. The student intern will get a chance to work with the editorial panel and also they will get an opportunity to interact with the writers of various fields. The procedural detail of getting messages from distinguished persons at the right time is also an act of learning for the students.

The need for Internship in present day education system and the platform available in the form of Dhanuyatra need to be synchronised for the youth of the locality. That will bring out the best in the youth to provide an option to make his or her passion as a profession.

Deepak Kumar Behera: The Saga of a Rustic Child

There is a general perception that an unruly boy would neither ever be able to build a successful career, nor lead a fulfilling life. But Deepak Kumar Behera who presently holds the position of the Vice Chancellor of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences(KISS) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar has proved the narrative wrong. This small write-up unfolds Deepak’s journey of life.

Deepak started his elementary schooling at Harihar U.P.

School, Kuarmunda, located in between Rourkela and Biramitrapur of Sundrargarh District. Every day he had to walk barefooted to reach school and every evening he used to study with the low luminosity of a kerosene lantern. On passing 5th class, he joined C.S.B. Zilla High School at Sambalpur where he studied from class 6th to 11thduring 1966-72. Throughout his school days, he was a student of Section-B. Deepak was always a back-bencher because of his height. He used to enjoy that sitting position for creating frequent disturbances in the class. As a below average student, Deepak had very little interest in studies. Though around 9.00am Deepak would leave home for school, yet he used to bunk classes frequently. He used to walk barefooted to cover the distance between his home and school. In order to save time, he used to walk through the paddy fields as a short-cut to reach school. Along with his friends he used to invade the nearest forest (Pati jungle) to pluck berries and fruits. On Friday, unfailingly Deepak would go to watch the matinee show of the new movies that were released either in Laksmi or Ashoka Talkies. With as little as just a Rupee all that he could afford to buy was, a ticket of the front row of seats. While seating there in the front row he had to keep moving his head from one side of the screen to the other, when either a horse was running or the heroine was dancing.

Deepak’s father was working as a land estimator in the minor irrigation department, Govt. of Odisha.  With a low income, his father was rearing his eight children with great difficulty. His father was leading life of honesty and integrity. After his superannuation, he started practising homeopathy so as to meet the basic needs of the family. But, for perfect diagnosis and relentless practice, his father could become a renowned homeopath in Western Odisha. Deepak was profoundly influenced by his father, his role model.

Deepak started his cricketing career as a bowler but gradually turned into a genuine all-rounder. He was a left arm off spin bowler and a middle order hard-hitting batsman. He was very popular for hitting sixes even against any mighty opponents. While he was a student of 10th class, some students of Lala Lajpat Rai Law College of Sambalpur invited him to play for their team in an exhibition match which was held at Bhawanipatna. He was instrumental in winning that match. He was working hard with all commitment, dedication, determination and will power to become a successful cricketer. His concentration and self-confidence helped him to be a frontline match winner for the local team that he was representing (MCC). In many crucial situations, he could completely turn the matches’ up-side down helping his team to win match after match.

The graph of Deepak’s professional career is worth noticing. Prior to joining KISS, he had served as the Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University and Berhampur University. He was also appointed as the First Vice Chancellor of Rajendra University, Balangir. Deepak has the distinction of being the only Odia to become the Vice-Chancellor of four different universities. Deepak was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at California State University, Long Beach, USA. He was also a DAAD Visiting Guest Professor at University of Tübingen, Germany. He was the recipient of Carlos Chagas National Foundation Research Fellow, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, National Research Foundation Fellow, South Africa, European Union CISCA Fellow, Indo-French Academic Exchange Fellow, ICSSR, New Delhi, Indo-Israel Cultural and Educational Exchange Fellow, UGC, New Delhi. He was the recipient of the prestigious Sarat Chandra Roy Memorial Gold Medal for his outstanding contribution in the field of social anthropology in India by the Asiatic Society, Kolkata in the year 2016. Deepak is now the General President of United Indian Anthropology Forum (UIAF). He is the Series Editor of Contemporary Society: Tribal Studies (10-volume Set, Concept, New Delhi). Deepak has visited several foreign countries for more than 40 times in different academic connections. He has taught students in more than a dozen countries across the globe. Deepak has published 21 books/edited volumes and has authored 132 research articles published in reputed journals. He has successfully guided 26 Ph.D. scholars. Under his stewardship, Berhampur University became the first state-funded University to secure Grade-A by NAAC. He also played a crucial role in helping Sambalpur University to secure Grade-A by NAAC.

Deepak’s blissful and modest family life is a model. Deepak happily married to Mamata Mohapatra (Rita) and they are blessed with a daughter Sweta (Titli). When their daughter was born, every well-wisher of them suggested Deepak to look for a second issue so as to have a male child to maintain the patriline. However, he ignored the suggestions of his friends and relatives. Now his daughter Titli is married and living happily with her husband in Canada working as Senior Business Analyst with Infosys. Deepak’s wife Mamata is now serving as Headmistress in a Govt. High School, Sambalpur.

The academic journey of Deepak began with a school located in a remote region of Odisha (Harihar UP School, Kuarmunda in the district of Sundergarh) while confronting with many failures/challenges finally ending up with an unprecedented success. He applied all the basic principles of cricket to academics and administration which helped him to excel in his professional life. The cricketing rules which he borrowed and applied in his profession are: (1) hard work, (2) concentration, (3) dedication, (4) determination, (5) patience (6) self-confidence and finally (7) enormous will power. The general perception that a naughty boy would never be able to build a successful career, nor would he ever lead a fulfilling life all together proved to be wrong in Deepak’s case. The life sketch of Deepak may inspire and motivate many youngsters of our generation who aspire to make their life sublime and beautiful.

Jagannath Sahu : At your Mercy

Jagannath Sahu is a 26 years old young man who hails from Barpali. He is son of Mamraj Sahu who sells vegetables at Barpali vegetables market. Mamraj is managing his home out of a meagre income that  he earns on a day today basis. Since April 2022 Jagannath has fallen sick with malfunctioning of his two kidneys.

The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is assuming alarming proportion in Western Odisha. The disease, which was earlier confined to specific pockets, is fast spreading its tentacles to different districts of the region. One of the major reasons for kidney failure is consumption of hard water which is present in the ground.

Mamraj took his son Jagannath from doctor to doctor. Finally the ailment detected to be kidney failure. Jagannath was referred to Veer Surendra Sai  Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla for dialysis. The nephrologist told Jagannath need a kidney transplant. His father Mamraj Sahu who have got the same blood group i.e. O+ve  prepared to donate one of his kidney.

On each dialysis they are spending around 25,000 INR. Until now they have spent 4 lacs on regular dialysis of Jagannath. Dialysis need to be done periodically twice every week. Jagannath will die the day dialysis is stopped.

Doctors have recommended to do kidney transplant at the earliest. Fortunately the blood group of his father Mamraj matches with Jagannath. The transplant could be done at Ramkrishna CARE Hospitat, Raipur. The budgeted expenses for the transplant is around 8 lakhs which  a vegetable seller like Mamraj cannot afford.

Malay Tripathy : A devotee of Lord Shiva

Sri Malay Tripathy of Barpali is a successful person in his personal, as well as professional life. By vocation he is a LIC agent.  Since his young age he is an ardent  devote  of Lord Shiva.  For as many as 12 years he had been to Baidyanath Dham in Jharkhand which infact is a Jyotirlinga. This dham involves the arduous activity of tracking a distance of 105 kms by walk from Sultanganj of Bihar to Deoghar of Jharkhand state. It takes in an  average three to four days  for devotees to track the distance.

Baidyanath Dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga in India and is considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.

Instead of begging Lord to fulfill any of his worldly desires,
Malaya Tripathy tracked the treacherous path of Baba Dham merely out of his love and  devotion for Lord Shiva.

Malaya has been blessed with three sons only and don't have daughters. With the grace of God all of them are well settled in life. But Malaya and his spouse sometimes felt the absence of a daughter. He had the secret urge to be the father of a daughter and to get her marry.

Malaya consistently tried for 4 years  and finally got the opportunity to become the father of Goddess Parvati for the Shital Sashthi Yatra, Barpali of 2022. He wonders his most beloved lord will be his son in law.

On the other hand his eldest son Pradyumna had been to Amarnath yatra in Himalayas for eleven years and twice to Baba dham.

Mahadeo Jaiswal: The Management Guru at the Grass Root of India

Business management is a specific field which the progenies of either business class or the rich families prefer to study so as to multiply their family treasures. Rarely could be seen a person who comes out of tribal India to reach the echelon of management education. But Mahadeo Jaiswal the Director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sambalpur is an exception to this established rule.

[his parents]

Mahadeo was born to a humble agricultural family of Ranjana, a small hamlet of Korba District of Chhattisgarh. His father was rearing his family by cultivating paddy. He had inherited 30 acres of agricultural land from ancestral property. They had four buffaloes and two wooden bullock carts. Their farming was purely depending on the grace of Lord Indra, the God of rain. Many years they were succumbed to low agricultural income due to poor monsoon rains. His father never went to attend any school, but knew the value of education. So he wanted to impart the best education to his children. He ensured all his children should go to primary school and learn the alphabets of Hindi which in fact is the National Language of India. His father enrolled his son in the Adibasi Prathamik Pathsala. It was a school for educating the aboriginal children of this subcontinent. On passing out primary school Mahadeo joined high school at Kathgora. For facilitating education his father shifted his family to Kathgora. His father bought one bicycle for him so as he can commute to school conveniently. Instead of alphabets Mahadeo was proficient on numbers. His fort was mathematics and in the 11th Board Exams he scored 99 percent in it. But instead of rejoicing Mahadeo wondered where on the path his one mark was dropped.

His father use to encourage all his children to study as far as possible so as to acquire knowledge and degrees, instead of doing any job. Whereas his other two brothers discontinued studies from school and opted to do business. But Mahadeo on passing out Matriculation went to Sagar University (Madhya Pradesh) to do graduation in Electronics. On acquiring the Graduation degree Mahadeo packed his bags and headed for New Delhi. He enrolled his name for PHD at Dept. of Computer Science, Delhi University. On acquiring the PhD degree in the year 1991 he applied for the post of Asst. Professor in Information & Digital Strategy at Institute of Rural Management (IRMA), Anand. This institution was setup by Dr Varghese Kurian who brought white revolution in India. He was the founding father of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). It is that cooperative organisation which markets milk products under the brand of Amul. In the year 1997, Mahadeo joined Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon as an Associate Professor.

The Holi

While standing outside the boundary wall Tingalu shouted “Hari are you coming to play the colours or not”? Hari said haan bo going. Hari came out of his home while running, but said don’t have money to buy either the colourful gulal(colour powder), the colour concentrate or the pichkari(water gun).

Tingalu asked Hari to bring that discarded punctured cycle tyre that was hanging on the wall. On questioning, he said you just keep watching. Together they went to the end of the street. From the pocket of his half pant Tingalu took out one match box. Hari asked, afterall it is Holi, what is the use of a matchbox? Are you going to fire any crackers? It's not Diwali either. Tingalu said you budbak(stupid), just gather the dry sticks and leafs. Tingalu fired the leafs with a match stick and placed the cycle tyre on top of it. Hari felt suffocated, because of the bad fume that emitted  out of it. Tingalu burnt the tyre until it turned to be black carbon. He collected the black carbon powder in a polythene and they headed for back home. Tingalu brought a small bottle of castor oil and mixed that with the carbon black powder to make a thick paste. Tingalu said here is our colour to play the Holi and swiped his both hands on the face of Hari. It was irritating and Hari checked his face on the mirror attached to the handle of a bike that was parked on the street. Hari was aghast as he could not recognise even his own face.

To pacify his own stand Tingalu said lets go and play the colours. Hari recalled he had to retaliate for an old issue with Bunty. He instigated Tingalu and together they headed towards his home. But at the chowk  Bunty along with a couple of friends catapulted balloons filled with coloured water. Together they pushed Bunty and drenched him in the drain. Due to the onslaught of summer the drain was nearly dry. Anyhow Bunty managed to pull out himself from the drain with a patch of dirt on his buttocks.

When Bunty stood he was able to hear two girls laughing at him. He turned and felt embarrassed to see Swati and her saheli Amrita were giggling.  Two of those girls came running with their pichkaris(water guns). Bunty lifted his both hands with a sense of surrender, but Amrita assured they did not intend to hurt him, instead wanted to help. Amrita went to the water tap and filled her plastic pichkari with water. She came back and asked Bunty to turn around. With her pichkari she gunned water on Bunty’s pants and washed the dirt. It was the onslaught of summer and the weather was dry with no moisture in the air. Bunty felt soothing when his body came in contact with water in the warm weather.

Amrita’s mother comes out of their home with a plate of sakkar pati sweets. It’s a special sweet that is made only once in the entire year and that is on the very day of Holi. She hands over two pieces of those sweets to Bunty.  With wet hands, Bunty puts the sweet in his mouth and relishes its taste.
