In rural India the doctor to population ratio is 1:1700. Imagine
there is just one qualified doctor for as many as 1,700 people.
Dr.E.Raghavendra Rao(MD) of Barpali is someone who served the public under the
Odisha State Government for thirty long years. during his state government service
career he has worked in the remote tribal areas of Odisha be it Chitrakonda,
Koraput, Khalikote, Balangir or Titilagarh before settling down at Barpali.
During the 80’s of the last Century there was no immunisation programme by the Odisha state government. Thousands of children happened to be affected by polio. Dr.Rao has innovated a technique to cure the children affected with this dreaded disease. He toned and stimulated the muscular metabolism of the affected limbs with electric current called Faradic Treatment. This treatment involves a month long hard work, but yields results. While working at Balangir and titilagarh during 80’s of the last century he treated hundreads of such patients sucessfully.
It was the year 1998 while he was serving at Community Health Centre(CHC), Barpali his son fell terminally sick. He took leave inorder to attend to his son. In the meanwhile he was transferred to Kantabanji by the involvement of a local politician. Overnight he was kicked out from the house where he was residing on a rental. He was helpless. He went to take shelter at the house of the barber who was serving him every weekend, of course on a rental. He could have returned to his hometown Berhampur at Ganjam Dist., Odisha, where he got landed property to lead a retired life. But, “No”. He was too stubborn to surrender to the given circumstances of life. He resigned from the job and stayed back at home. But the needy people pour from far and wide distances to get the cure from the ailments.
Though working for the society, but he is poor in socialising, because he lacks time. He is a workaholic and never got any Sundays or religious holidays while at Barpali. Only when he steps out of the base camp, he avails un-disturbed sleep at night hours. Apart from work he is passionate about few other things in life, be it watching cricket or solving the cross-words in the daily news paper till late night.

In an average every day an Indian spends two and half hours on social media. It won't be wrong to point out, whatever time that you are spending is all about unsocial gossip. All this doesn't yield any positive results either for self or for the society at large. It causes absolute wastage of prime time of your life. Yet there are a chosen few who are using these new age electronic media for the welfare of almost unknown persons across the state, nation and the globe.
The evangelist about whom we are talking here is Chanchal Mishra who hails from Balangir of Odisha. By vocation he works with the Road Transport Organisation(RTO) department. This person is not someone to be nailed to earth. His mind keeps on wandering.
His grandfather Late Chaturbhuja Mishra was a freedom fighter, and the then President of Sonepur Prajamandal. Chanchal was motivated on knowing about his service and the sacrifice that he made for the nation.
Once Chanchal received a message on his Twitter handle from one of his friends who hails from West Bengal. She said consequent to demonetization and the job loss a person by the name Madhab Nag of Bolangir district is stuck at Nagpur, Maharashtra and immediately seeks help. No sooner on getting the message Chanchal spoke with the concerned person and got to know about all the maladies that he has gone through ever since losing his Job. Instead of kick starting his bike and reaching anywhere, while sitting at home Chanchal just tweeted the issue and tagged #IndiaCares. He is a member of that voluntary social media platform, created to help countrymen by Odisha's erstwhile IG, Crime Branch, Sri Arun Bothra, and also called him over the phone for assistance.
[Chanchal could be seen along with Arun Bothra]After two days of relentless trying a person from Nagpur provided grocery for the survival of his family. On getting a photo as a proof Chanchal believed in the power of tweeting on social media. After taking guidance from the Superintendent of Police, Bolangir Chanchal registered the name of Madhab Nag and his wife in Odisha's Covid19 portals to bring him back to his home. On reaching home that beneficiary immediately called Chanchal and acknowledged heartfelt thanks for taking all the efforts.
On the request of Chanchal once IndiaCares, a NGO, reached AIIMS, Bhubaneswar with 2 files of blood to help a patient who was admitted in their ICU. During this pandemic, Chanchal has helped one girl student by the name Puja Agrawal of Dunguripali block of Sonepur district who was stuck at Kota, Rajastastan. Arun Bothra as well forwarded his helping hand in this regard since he hails from Rajasthan itself.

[Along with Kalikesh Singhdeo] |
Chanchal has got the weakness for the people of his district and state. When he found people of village Sukha of Sonepur district were deprived of easy banking services as that village didn't have an ATM machine for dispensing cash. He spoke with the bank officials and even with Kalikesh Singhdeo the MP of Balangir district in this matter. And SBI setup an ATM machine for the larger interest of the people.
During the initial phases of pandemic in the year 2020 lot many Oriyas lost their jobs in different cities across India. As a consequence they started migrating back to their home state. They were walking hundreds of Miles altogether while malnourished. To address the burning need of the time Arun Bothra created a start-up by the name "India cares 2020" where is Chanchal joined as a volunteer.

[Chanchal could be seen along with Baijayant Panda] |
It is worth noting how Chanchal became a disciple of Twitter within a couple of months of joining it. He opened an account in November 2015. He was casually spending time in it. But one day he noticed a tweet of his that has got a like from none other than Baijayant Panda. Jay Panda has got a verified account and the person we are talking all about is a stalwart leader of the ruling party of India i.e. Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP). He is the National Vice President, a spokesperson of ruling saffron party.
The tweet of Baijayant Panda ignited the fire within Chanchal. It was a big boost to the morale of this new twitterati. Chanchal thought when his tweet can grab the attention of someone who was a Rajya Sabha MP for two terms and once MP of Lok Sabha, that means he can handle twitter with much ease.
The activities of Chanchal are not only restricted to human beings. He has got a soft corner for any other living beings. On 27th March he was in Baghala Village of Bolangir district and got to know two Dogs fell in a dry well and 13 days passed ever since. The villagers were feeding the dogs from the top for their survival because they failed to rescue them. Chanchal brought that to the notice of concern through Twitter and on the same day evening the dogs were rescued alive by the Odisha Fire department by 3 hours of untiring efforts.
So it is evident when our conscience is clear like that of Chanchal, you and I as well can help our countryman known or unknown by using Social media like Twitter as a weapon. These new age tools be it Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp are like the lamp of Aladdin if used for the right cause they can save lives.

Ghashiram Mishra of Balangir is a living
legend of Koshali music and culture. He has dedicated over five decades of his
adult life on uplifting and promoting ganda baja of western Odisha. At
the outset you need to know in Sambalpuri the word ganda refers to the
community of Schedule Caste or the untouchables. This ganda baja music
could only be heard in the western parts of Odisha namely the districts of
Balangir, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda.
Somewhere prior to the Independence of India i.e. in the year 1945 Ghasiram was born at Balangir which then happened to be a princely state. The socio economic scenario of western Odisha during the Independence era was worse. Here a majority of the population comprises Schedule Caste, Schedule Tribe and Other Backward Class(OBC) people. Seven decades back a major section of people were deprived of education, hence economically they were backward. They were oppressed by a handful of Bramhins who were literates. His father ensured all his children should attend the government schools that were imparting free education.
Ghasiram attended upper primary school at Radharani Pada and was walking barefoot all the way to Prithwiraj High School which is on the vicinity only.
During his childhood Ghasiram happened to fall sick quite often. Following the ritual of that era he was handed over to a dalit family and immedietly bought from them in lieu of a bag of paddy. It was how all the troubles were warded off from the life of Ghasiram. As a consequence of which he carried the unusual name of “Ghasi”. The reader should know how the caste system in Odisha prevails even as on this date in the society. Especially the Bramhins don't even drink a drop of water at the home of any Schedule Caste i.e untouchables.
Due to that event which took place during his childhood, Ghasiram got affiliated to the community of Gondas. During his school and college days for the sake of entertainment there was neither a tape recorder or television. Whenever a barat(wedding procession) used to pass through the streets Ghasi was dancing to the beats of the local band called Gonda baja.
He recounts an incident of his life. When Ghasiram was barely nine years old his father conducted his thread ceremony(brata upanayana). Thread ceremony or Brat Upanayana is a sacred ritual which is observed by the Bramhin community where a kid is initiated as per the Hindu ritual. In this function a sacred thread(paita) is worn by Hindu boys following a series of rituals. All his relatives reached their home three days ahead of the scheduled function. Early in the morning the hair of Ghasiram was tonsured by a barber. All the while that kid of 9 years old was crying out of fear. When the hair removal was over the barber showed the mirror to Ghasiram. That young kid looking at his bald head in the mirror unable to recognise his own self. But when the ritual of yogyan started a group of musicians played the local Gonda Baza. Though the priests were chanting the holy Hindu hymens, on the other end the ears of Ghasiram were stimulated by the raw and unorthodox music that was played by those people who were the oppressed class of the society. When the Ritual of prayers was over the guests went to have the feast, but that kid Ghasiram ran towards the group of people who were playing the local Gonda Baja.
Ghasiram asked the musician who was holding the
muhuri(trumpet) to let him blow the instrument. Those musicians where fear struck and asked Ghasiram not to reach near to them, because they were knowing their social status. If Ghasiram would touch their musical instrument then he would be outcast by the orthodox Brahman society of that era. That kid became sad, because his wish was unfulfilled. But to make Ghasiram happy that musician went and plucked one green palm leaf and made a pipi(musical instrument) and handed that over to Ghasiram. Ghasiram became happy and kept on blowing that musical instrument until evening. Now the reader needs to know the impact of that event. The moment when that musician handed over the leaf musical instrument on the very day of the sacred thread ceremony, that unknown musician became the Guru(teacher) and Ghasiram as the recipient became the Sishya(student). In fact that musician has transmitted two essential elements out of the five panchatatwa namely vayu(air) and agni(fire) which Ghasiram is carrying until date. Now Ghasiram realises that it was a cosmic event which had altogether altered the track of his life from Shastriya Sangeet to Gonda Baja or the music of the untouchables. And at the fag end of his career seldom he repents for choosing the music of oppressed class of the society, instead of sastriya sangeet.Unlike today then when Ghasiram was a school student there were no electronic instruments like a tape recorder or a television for entertainment. So to spend his time he was resorting to watch different forms of religious activities like dand, kirtan, palla, naam, Ramlila and ghubukudu. And most of the artists perform such roadshows during the month of Chaitra i.e. March when there is neither the chilling cold of the winter, nor the hot weather of the summer. Coincidentally it was the time when the annual exams of his class were going. Instead of attending the last paper he went to watch astha prahari in his Radharani Pada. After the summer holidays when the school reopened the class teacher called his father to report in the school. He questioned why Ghasiram did not attend the exam. On returning from school his father called Ghasiram and punished him blatantly without looking at his abdomen, chest or the buttock.
When the martial punishment of his father was over while crying his mother with her motherly affection hugged him with care. She said she wants her son to be safe, sound and happy wherever he lives. She opened her wooden almirah and from the stack of sarees she brought out a cloth money purse. She took out all the currency that she had saved in it. His mother handed over exactly 22 INR and said to go to any corner of this country and to pursue a career of his choice instead of getting the brutal punishment from his father. His father was not only a man of strict discipline, but was also highly furious. She handed over 22 INR and said to run away even before his father returns home.
Ghasiram left home with a cloth bag carrying a pair of dress and a karia(towel) and a couple of raw wood sticks called kathi to clean the tooth. A friend of his from the neighbourhood accompanied him. They boarded a local bus and reached Titilagarh. Then Ghasiram might be 13 years old and was a student of Class 8th. He had no knowledge of the world except one and only Bombay(now called as Mumbai) because it was the place where Hindi movies are produced. From Titlagarh railway station they caught a passenger train for Raipur. When the train crossed through kantabanji most of the new passengers started speaking in Hindi which was almost an alien language to Ghasiram. On reaching Raipur his friend took an excuse and returned from there by handing over 6 INR to Ghasiram which he had with him. At Raipur Ghasiram boarded one express train for Mumbai of course without buying a ticket. After travelling for 12 hours or so the co-passengers questioned him where he was traveling all alone and the motive behind it. When Ghasiram said he is going to Mumbai to work in the film industry, people discouraged him by saying Mumbai is a big city where you will go and with whom you will stay? They asked him to get down at the very next station.
When the train halted he stepped out from the train compartment along with the cloth bag that he was carrying. At that big station all those people were speaking in Marathi to which he was alien. On questioning he got to know the name of the city was Nagpur. He went to a munshi(police officer) and questioned if he could spend two days on the platform. Next day when he stepped outside the railway station he befriended with a rickshaw puller. That person happened to be a drunkard. In the evening when he used to drink desi alcohol and sleep on the pavement of the railway platform Ghasiram learnt to pull the rickshaw. On the very third night he got 2 INR from a passenger for ferrying his luggage to the nearest street. That small fair immensely boosted the spirit of Ghasiram. He got assured he could survive in this harsh world. Every Night he was earning somewhere 3 to 5 INR. Ghasiram was paying half of the fare to that rickshaw puller and keeping the other half for himself.
After pulling the rickshaw for almost a month he came across a Sardar who was operating one road transport company by the name Lamba Transport. As a small kid his job was to just carry the bag of his owner and to travel along with him wherever his boss goes. That Sardar happened to be a humble man. It was a respectable job for Ghasiram as compared to pulling the rickshaw. In three months he was able to build a capital of 28 INR. But in the meanwhile he got a postcard from his father who addressed him to return home without carrying any fear in heart. Accordingly Ghasiram returned home while abandoning his mission to conquer Bollywood. When he reached home his father instead of giving any punishment asked him to follow a career that he wished for.
Ghasiram enrolled his name at Bidya Bhushan Sanskrit College, Balangir. In Radharani Pada opposite his home was the house of Dr Ram Prasad Mishra who was a prominent politician of western belt of Odisha. He was working for Ganatantra Party and later joined Swatantra Party and Indian National Congress(INC) as well. He was holding important portfolios as the Finance, Agriculture and Health minister of Odisha. He was the most prominent leader of western belt of Odisha. It was he who fought with the erstwhile Chief Minister of Odisha Biju Pattnaik to set up VSS Medical College at Burla. His two daughters were learning sastriya sangeet from Guru Bhrushaba Barik, while his son was learning tabla from Guru Sarathi Chand. While the gurus were teaching to those kids, Ghasiram was sitting outside on the pavement and was keenly listening to the gospel of those teachers. Without the knowledge of those two gurus Ghasiram became their student as if Ekalabya.
While keeping his word his father enrolled the name of Ghasiram at Koshal Kalamandap, Balangir. Officially he started attending classes from 4th August 1964 to learn sastriya sangeet. And the rest is history.
[Guru Ghasiram Mishra could be seen along with this blogger E Kiran Mohan]
After completing 1st year of engineering during summer break Anupam did few drawings and posted them in his Facebook. Overnight he became a talk in their college Facebook Group. One of his professors by the name Bhagwati P. Patnaik browsed his Facebook timeline. When college reopened his professor asked Anupam if he can do a concept art with sand on the 20 years journey of their college.
On 17th September 2016 his college celebrated its 20th Anniversary, incidentally it was the Birthday of Anupam as well. In the college auditorium there was a huge gathering of students and many invitees from across Odisha. The Chief Guest reached and the function began. Anup was supposed to play that sand animation video on stage, but due to some technical glitch it could not be demonstrated. Anup was disheartened as his hard work of more than 20 days went to drain. In the evening while Anup was mourning his mentor B P Patnaik asked him to cheer up. He suggested Anup to upload a demonstration video in YouTube instead. And when Anupam uploaded a video that went viral among their college students. Overnight he became a talk among the students of his college. That night itself Anupam set the clear goal of his life to be an artist.
Initially Anup used to work in all mediums of colours, but finally he settled himself with watercolour. He says when you work with water colour there is no room for errors or omissions. In the art industry and social media Anupam Pathak is known artist for the elaborate figures of sadhus and sanyasis that he draws and paints.
Basically sadhus or the sages are the ones who have renounced this geophysical world. They heed no attention to the metaphysical world. Likewise neither we the worldly people pay any attention to the circumstances in which they live life. Anupam has able to showcase the pain in the faces of different Sadhus that he paints.
During December, 2017 he wanted to participate in "Jaipur Art Summit". But to travel from the east coast of India to the farther west he did not have enough money to buy the train tickets. But his passion ruled over all the prevailing circumstances of his life. This passionate lover of art altogether sold his laptop to one of his batch mates for a mere 10,000 INR. He was scared, because his father will thrash him when get to know about such a heinous crime. Anupam went to Jaipur and participated in that international art event. Neither earned any money nor earned any trophies, but returned to Odisha with the experience that enriched his art career.
This artist has mastered an almost unknown art form called “fire art”. He burns a candle and as per the needed design he moves the art paper on top of the flame. The white paper absorbs the black carbon of the fire. Afterward he gives needed touch with a knife on the paper and gets the outline. At times he uses watercolour on fire art as well. However he alerts this form of art needs prolonged practice. In case of minor mishandling the paper will burn and will be redundant.

Bidyut the literal meaning of which is electricity stands as a testimony to its literal meaning. He was born at Sambalpur during the nascent stage of India’s independence. His father Upendra Dash was an Asst. Sub-Inspector with the Government of Odisha and was commanding a lot of respect in the society. His father was a strict disciplinarian. He was not only following a set of norms to live a wholesome life, but was also inducing his siblings to observe those hard and fast rules to live an accomplished life. His ancestral village is Kalangapali than in the undivided Sambalpur district, but now comes under the geographical periphery of Bargarh district. He is the eldest son, so with the growing age he realised his responsibilities to look after his two sisters and the younger brother. By race being an Aranyak Bramhmin Bidyut happens to be fair in complexion the way he appears today. As he was lean and thin so was physically agile and the most active kid in the school.
![]() |
[His father Sh. Upendra Dash] |
Then when he was attending primary school the Indo Pak war outbroke. As a kid he along with his school friends were so jubilant that they wanted to fight the war on behalf of their country in order to give a befitting reply to Pakistan, our neighbouring enemy nation. Then there itself Bidyut subconsciously set his ambition in life to join Indian armed forces.
[His mother Late Mukhyabati Dash]
When he was barely ten years old unfortunately his mother expired out of jaundice. It was a big jolt that he faced in his life at such an early age. He not only lost the person who was feeding his belly, but she was the lone person who was nourishing him with love and affection. In 1975 his father got transferred from police to the vigilance department at Balangir. Over there Bidyut joined Government Boys Middle English(ME) School which is located at Gandhi Nagar. His father set the ambition to make his son a Police Inspector, a position which is higher than his own service rank. To make his dream true every morning by 4.30AM he was waking up Bidyut and taking him to the playground of Prithviraj High School. He was making that young kid Bidyut to do a marathon race across the ground four times without giving a pause even for a minute to breath. That was equivalent to the length of two kilometers. Likewise he was imparting training in long jump, high jump, javelin and discus throw. It was how Bidyut turned into a physically tough and well built person. His father even purchased one bat for his son to play cricket. That happened to be the first ever cricket bat any kid of his village to possess. The boy fencing the wicket was holding that bat, but the runner on the other end was holding one stick(ଅମରି ବାଡି) instead of a bat.
Then his father used to possess a Philips transistor. During the 70’s of the last Century, possessing a radio in rural India was a thing of aristocracy. Every day the farmers of his village after working hard in their agricultural fields were gathering on the courtyard of their home. Radio happens to be a good source of entertainment for those people, a majority of whom were illiterates. They were eagerly waiting for Bidyut to play the Akashvani Sambalpur. Bidyut and his sisters were guarding the table where that Philips radio was placed. They were removing the cover and delicately cleaning it with a piece of cloth.
Likewise it was his father the first person of Kalangapali village to buy a black and white Konark television. Every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. all people of his village irrespective of gender and age were gathering to watch Hindu mythic tele serial Ramayan and Mahabharat. And in the evening they were watching one Hindi movie. While they were watching that television, sometimes that failed to receive the aerial signal, so it was Bidyut and his younger brother Pankaj who were going to the balcony of their house to rotate the antenna towards the north direction so as to catch the signal of Sambalpur Doordarshan. He would return to the ground floor when people would sought yes they could see the picture on the screen. But see now how fortunate you are to read this blog while holding the phone on your palm.
During the school days he was securing either 4th or 5th rank in the examinations. On reaching Class 6th he joined Junior Red Cross. He participated actively in all the workshops which used to be conducted in school. And that staunch kid was selected for the Red Cross camp which was held at Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha. His school asked him to get one new uniform of navy blue half pant and sky colour shirt for the purpose. He recalls that half pant was having buttons, instead of a zip as we get these days.
With much enthusiasm Bidyut went along with other selected students and their guide(teacher). That curious boy was jubilant because it was his first ever sponsored trip to the counterpart Odisha, which was modern and advanced as compared to western Odisha. His friend has told him at Bhubaneswar there is a Nautala(ନୌତଲା) building where Heads of all government departments were housed. It was of nine floors and Bidyut had never seen a tower of that height either at Bargarh, Balangir or Sambalpur.
During the year 1982 while they were living at Loisinga he was a student of B.Com. Everyday along with his friends he was going to the nearest river for taking a bath. They were so jubilant that they were going to the railway bridge which might be at an elevation of 30 feet or so above the water level. From the centre of the bridge they were jumping into the river. They were not only taking the hazard of confronting the incoming trains, but simultaneously there could be large rocks underneath the water with which they could collide. If any one would have landed on them they could either die on the spot or could turn permanently paralysed.
Unlike today during the 80's of the last Century there were no entertainment avenues for people to spend time. Every winter there used to be a bioscope display of movies in his village. One night when the show was over Bidyut along with his four friends went down the steps of the temple pond to execute a mission. They wanted to smoke two Regent King cigarettes that they had purchased. But those stupid had overlooked buying a matchbox to fire the cigarettes. Immediately Bidyut volunteered to arrange the fire to light up the cigarettes. Bidyut went to the temple. He saw the priest was folding things to shut the temple for the night. Bidyut prostrated by folding his both hands while leaning his head towards Goddess Durga. Then he went near the thali where arati was placed. He found the priest was inside the garbhagriha (Sanctum sanctorum) so silently lifted the matchbox and rushed back to the pond. They ignited those two Regent King cigarettes with the match stick and started puffing them to their lungs content. Those days Regent King happens to be the most premium brand of cigarettes that were available at a cost of 35 paise each. Then the Gold Flake brand was even not born. Four of them while puffing those two cigarettes in turn one after another his father reached there while doing night patrolling. On hearing the shouting of those young brats his father asked, “who there”? Immediately those boys threw the cigarettes in the pond. His father though recognised his son Bidyut, but did not utter a word over there because he did not want to offend his son in the presence of his friends. While returning home Bidyut was in a state of fear. Does this writer need to narrate further what was the consequence when Bidyut reached his home and confronted his father?
While he was a student of B.Com 2nd year at Rajendra College, Balangir he along with his three other friends filled the application form to appear for the Staff Selection Commission(SSC) examination. On getting the intimation letters a day before those boys boarded the passenger train from Balangir at evening. That train is unofficially called Rangabati. Three of them travelled without buying any train tickets, because then it was the norm for college students to travel ticketless in the entire length and breadth of the region wherever his University has got colleges. The motive of going Sambalpur a day before the examination was to watch the then newly released super hit Hindi movie Prem Rog. They went to Ashoka Talkies to watch the evening show. The lead actors of that movie were Rishi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure. Since Bidyut and his college friends were teens so they wholeheartedly enjoyed the movie which was based on a love story. When the picture was over obviously they did not had the money to hire a room in a hotel, so they went to the railway station to sleep on the platform itself. A host of mosquitos did the sting operation during the entire night and sucked their blood. In the morning Bidyut woke up and went to the public convenience on the Railway platform itself to refresh. After eating 5 biri baras with motar chana by paying 1 INR(yes One Rupee only) he went to Gangadhar Meher College to appear for the examination. To the surprise of his two other friends Bidyut submitted his answer sheet within one hour of examination. In the afternoon likewise all of them returned ticketless in the same Rangabati train. It was a joy ride trip for him to Sambalpur. On returning Balangir once again he was preoccupied attending classes in the college. After 3 months Bidyut got a postcard of 10 paisa from the Air Force recruitment office of Bhubaneswar intimating he has qualified the entrance test. His family members especially father was rejoiced to know about it. It was a big turning point in the life of Bidyut Kumar Dash.
During April 1984 on the very day of Ramnavami which happens to be an auspicious day for the Hindus, Bidyut reported at Indian Airforce Recruitment Centre, Bhubaneswar. Same day at evening he along with 29 other recruits boarded the Express train for Belgaum of Karnataka. He reached the Administrative Training Institute(ATI) located at Sambre. The role of this institute is to impart the non-technical modular training to those who will work in the Indian Air Force administrative offices. After undergoing a hardcore training in office administration and accounts for a year Bidyut joined as an Airman at the Air Force Station, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. For twenty years or so he kept on working in that organisation in various capacities at Kanpur and Nagpur as well. Finally in the year 2004 on retiring from the Indian Air Force he had a firm conviction not to join back in any government organisations be it Central or the Odisha State Government.
Bidyut returned back to his home town in Odisha. But as a man of action he is not someone to sit idle at home. He searched for different earning avenues even though his pension is secured for life time. As a defence personnel by nature he is very bold and tough. He opted to try his luck in entrepreneurship. He set up one brick kiln at Padampur. Its a Sub Division of Dist. Bargarh. It's a completely dry and arid region having no irrigation facility. Each year there is only a single crop of paddy cultivation which purely depends upon the grace of monsoon rains. As a result of which there are many social evils of unemployment, starvation and migration of labour. But Bidyut failed miserably in his maiden business venture because the people whosoever associated with him were not committed to their words and job. Unfortunately he lost around 2.5 lakhs INR in that venture which amounted to a big chunk out of his lifetime savings.
He became cautious because he got another 40 years or so to live on this earth to rear his family members. He prepared a resume of self and as if an unemployed youth of 21 years old ventured out in search of a job. It was in the year 2004 Bidyut got a job with AVP Motors, Rengali Camp as its Showroom Manager. That is an authorised dealer of John Deere tractors. Under his able leadership in a span of one financial year his sales force sold as much as 139 units and became the sales topper in the entire Eastern Zone of India.

[Along with Aparajita Sarangi, Member of Parliament, Bhubaneswar] |
This man made his presence felt in the entire western zone of Odisha. Many organisations from different backgrounds of Western Odisha started inviting him as a guest to their programs. Somewhere in the first quarter of 2005 it was Lakhotia Computer Centre(LCC) that is located at Kalimandir Chowk, Bargarh has invited him to teach English to their students. It was then he realised those college students who so ever passed out of Odiya medium Government High Schools of this region have got the lacuna in English knowledge. It happens to be a major hindrance for them to get employment in the private sector jobs. To answer the needs of the candidates Bidyut Sir set up The Institute for Spoken English and Personality Development(ISPDE).
By then Bidyut became a known figure in Bargarh town. The following year i.e. in 2006 the women wing of Bargarh Marwari Mahila Munch sought the help from ISPDE to impart training to their members. Bidyut’s institute imparted an array of personality development programmes to the enrolled members under the title “Elite Ladies”. Since ages the female gender of that community are very conservative and they are not updated with changing times. ISPDE imparted training of personality development; stress management; how to deal with in-laws; smart dining etiquettes etc.
Bidyut was well aware about people of this region lacking the knowledge of English. His institute started offering English Speaking courses at an affordable price to the students most of whom hail from the poor agricultural families of Bargarh district. They were charging a mere 1,300 INR for a course duration of four months, which was equal to an average 10 INR per day . Over the period as many as 5,600 job seekers have enrolled their name and has taken the training from ISEPDE. Three years later he registered a trust altogether by the name AHEAD. It has got two wings. The first one is ”Language Lab '' where they are giving training of English language. And the other wing is called Youth Employability School. Under this venture they are exclusively answering to the array of new employment avenues that have opened in call centres across the globe. Until now as many as 200 of their candidates have got placement with industry leaders like IBM, Daksh, Reliance and so on and so forth.
Way back in the year 2010 he started an institute for the job aspirants in banking and government sector as well.
During January 2020 Bidyut was invited along with 39 other defence veterans and felicitated before 6,000+ spectators on the very stage of Dhanu jatra which is world's largest open air theatre. This Hindu festival has even got the space in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Bidyut Dash has done his share of philanthropic work as well. During the initial phase of pandemic Corona outbreak i.e. in the summer of 2020 his organisation tied up with Ajim Premji Foundation of Bangalore. Premji is the founding father of WIPRO and considered to be the Czar of India’s IT industry. His wealth is estimated to be somewhere US$ 7.3 billions. Bidyut along with his team of volunteers undertook the assignment given by Ajim Premji Foundation. They distributed somewhere 1,500 bags of grocery to poor families in Padampur, Gaisilet, Attabira and Bargarh blocks of our district. Each of those bags carried 30 kgs rice, dal, salt, edible oil, suji, chuda, onions, potatoes and of course salt. It was definitely not a big succour but has provided subsistence to small families to survive at least for a month.
During 2014-17 his institute AHEAD tied up with ACC Cement and imparted vocational training to 600+ unemployed youth of five panchayats of Bargarh district namely Bardol, Bargaon, Dungri, Kantapali and Khaliapali. Out of them around 60 candidates got placements with government departments including armed forces and paramilitary services. On the other hand somewhere around 250 to 275 candidates joined private sector jobs like Reliance Jio, Tata Motors, SBI credit cards, Vishal Mega Mart etc.
In July 2017 Bidyut under Ahead Trust took over a Private CBSE pattern school by the name Sri Siddhi Vinayak Public School located at Rengali Camp, Attabira that was in the verge of clampdown. The school caters education to the wards of the rural families whose prime occupation is agriculture. The motto of this school is to educate the children of the poor families and to make them sustainable.
In India most of the private companies carry corporate social responsibilities(CSR). But Bidyut Dash is someone who is pursuing individual social responsibilities(ISR). In India when the employees of either Central or any state governments retire from their job, they live an unproductive life despite carrying with them the rich working experience. They just plan to spend their retirement life with the lump sum superannuation money that accumulates over their lifetime. But Bidyut Dash says he is not born to sleep. So what even if he is no more guarding the international border of India, but will keep on working for his people, region and the country until the last breath.
