Now this bustling little town is renowned world-over for the weaving of Sambalpuri ikat handloom fabrics. Agriculture is its prime economy. And when you happen to visit this little town don't miss to taste Chaul bara.

Baragulia khaja

This is a special sweet stuff which is unknown to the rest of the world except the people of west Odisha. In fact this sweet meet is available only at Hotel Jai Bharat, which is located at bus stand of Barpali. This hotel is preparing and selling Baragulia khaja since past three generations i.e. spanning over 80 years.

Recipe:
This sweet is made of atta (Whole wheat flour). Atta is mixed with water and dough is prepared the way you prepare rotis. The dough (wet atta) is made into small balls(guli) than they are deep fried in oil, until they turn crunchy. Jageri(gud) is boiled in another kadahi. When it turns liquid the fried atta balls are dripped in it. Then with the hand they count 12 pieces of these balls and stuff in hand to make these sweets.

In Oriya its name is baraguli which literally means 12 balls. So you may count each bunch of baraguli khaja and ensure yourself there are 12 balls. The new generation may not prefer this Baragulia khaja over the other Indian sweets like Rasgolla, Rasmalai, Gulabjamun or jalebis. Seldom they know that wheat contains carbohydrates that is good for health. On the other hand this sweet is free of saturated fat and cholesterol, since it is not made with milk substances like paneer or malai. Further there is no use of vanaspati(Dalda) but vegetable oil. Whole wheat is rich in “gluten” a protein content that increases the elasticity of the flour. The whole grain is extremely nutritious and healthy compared to maida. Whole wheat grain is power packed with nutrients. It consists of the bran, germ and endosperm. Do you know each of these sweets are being sold for just INR Rs.6 (around 10 US Cents). That means the average price for one guli(ball) is 50 Paise.
