Mathmatics Saree

These days above video of Vidya Balan is going viral in the social media. She could be seen wearing a Sambalpuri ikat saree with all the mathematics equations. She is the lead actress of the upcoming movie Sakuntala Devi that has been filmed on the biography of a famous Indian mathematician.

The master mind behind the sketch of this design is Dibya Meher, who himself is a software engineer and now working with HCS at Bangalore. Dibya is the nephew of Sant Kabir awardee Late Bhagabana Meher of Barpali. Bhagabana was not that literate so Dibya draw the design by collecting all the mathematical equations from his engineering text books. There were four original pieces produced way back 2017 out of which two pieces were sold to Priyadarsini handloom store, Bhubaneswar with the title “Engineering” saree for 25,000/- INR each.

But later this idea was borrowed by Copycat Meher of Sonepur. He as well started producing mathematics sarees in black and blue colour just by altering some equations. Exactly this is how the ikat weavers carry their age old vocation.  

If the master weaver Bhagabana Meher would have alive he might have filed a suit in the court.
