Dr Abhisekh kumar Sanyal: Charity at Heart

Dr Abhishek Sanyal was Born and brought up at Digras, Dist. Ahmednagar, Maharastra. His father was a pass out from IIT Khadagpur in mechanical engineering. He was a professor of an agricultural university. But while Abhisekh was barely 11 years old his father expired.

At such an young age Abhisekh and his elder sister took the responsibility of their home. Since they did not had a house of their own, they had to sift to the outskirt of Gondia city to get a cheaper accommodation. Every weekend Abhisekh and his sister were collecting the money from the neighbours in the colony. While carrying the cloth bags they were riding their cycles and going to vegetables market of Gondia located at a distance of three and half kilometres. The two siblings were bringing the fresh vegetables and delivering them in their locality. Whatever surplus vegetables they were left with was their profit and were handing over to their mother to cook at home. This was how the two youngsters were helping their mother to manage their shattered home.

Even though Abhisekh was the youngest of the family but while he was a student of Standard 8th he tried every possible way to earn money so as to support his mother and elder sister. Every winter there used to be a fair in their village for long four months where different shopping stalls were setup. That apart circus, magic, mouth ka kuan, ram jhula, bhul bhulaia were also conducting shows. After returning from school that kid was going to the fair along with his friends for fun and frolic. But the intention of Abhisekh was to get some temporary assignment. From evening 5.00PM till 9.30PM that kid was managing the ticket counter of the circus show. On a day basis Abhisekh was getting a pay of around 35 INR, which would be less than half US$ as on this date. But that boy was getting free entry to watch these shows, which otherwise he could never get the opportunity. By the time he was returning home it was too late at night though by than his sister was sleeping, but his mother was waiting for her son. Abhisekh was handing over 35 INR to his mother so that she will buy the grocery next day morning. Only after serving dinner to him his mother was partaking food. So this doctor realises the value of each single Rupee that he earns as on this day. He says it is not only important how honestly you earn money, but even more important is to be vigilant how wisely this money is used for the end use. Since his mother was not a qualified lady, it was his elder sister who was overseeing his studies. No Abhisekh did not had the privilege to attend any private tutorials. He was just grasping whatever that was taught by his teachers in the classroom. As he can’t afford to buy any study books he was borrowing them from his batch mates. But he had to write extensive notes as his friends can’t lend their text books during the time of half yearly and yearly exams. Abhisekh had inculcated the habit of collecting the unused white papers from the old note books of his batch mates. His sister was stitching those white papers and making the fresh note books for use. Despite keep on breathing in the neck deep water that stoic and sturdy fellow not only passed the 10th in the very first attempt, but with a first division. It boosted the moral of his mother and his sister who were raising that kid. On joining college he set his eyes to pursue the career of medicine. Abhisekh have got a technical bent of mind. At home on his own he was repairing the water pipes or different electrical equipment. The neighbours in the vicinity knew that boy possessing such skills. Whosoever in need was shouting the help of that boy. Abhisekh was rushing as a plumber to resolve their problems. But in return instead of getting cash, that kid was getting his fee in kind like a cup of tea and breakfast or tiffin box of curry to take home.

His sister qualified in the engineering entrance test and joined India’s premier engineering college i.e. Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Roorkee. She opted to pursue civil engineering. Three years later that boy qualified in the medical entrance test and joined medical college. In the year 2005 Abhisekh qualified as a doctor with MBBS degree from Yavatmal.

Afterwards he left for Christian Medical College(CMC), Vellore to pursue Post Graduation in Physical Medicine and Reheblitation(PMR). CMC, Vellore ranked to be one of the best institution in the world for PMR. On passing out MBBS most of his batch mates opted for the lucrative opportunities and went abroad. But the heart and soul Dr Abhisekh Sanyal was crying for the marginal people of India. One of his professor suggested instead of returning to his home state Maharastra, he should move to any other backword regions of India and serve the underprivileged people. Since he hail from the western parts of India he thought to shift altogether to the other part of this subcontinent. Even though Dr Abhisekh Sanyal had no antecedent to Odisha he thought to serve the people of this eastern state of India which is emerging as an economic power. In fact Odisha is one of the hostile regions of India because its 39.31% of the geographic area comprising 61,204.17 sq. kms is of forest area. Over here as many as 62 different primitive tribes live. And the rate of illiteracy is as high as 27%. And it would be wise not to talk about the poverty ratio. He joined Kalinga Hospital at Bhubaneswar and from there he went to work at Som Hospital. One day while he was working one old sick person came to get the treatment. On interacting with that person Dr.Abhisekh got know he didn’t had any money either to pay the consultancy fee or to buy the medicine or to return to his abode. This doctor asked where does he stay? That helpless old man politely replied Missionary of Charity which is located at Jalana 14 kms away in Khurda district. Just on hearing it, the benevolent face of Mother Teresa appeared in the mind of Dr. Abhisekh Sanyal. The heart of Dr. Abhisekh Sanyal filled with nectar of love. This godly doctor took out the stethoscope from his shoulder and dropped that on his table and stood up. He said to his patient “lets go”. He made the old man sit on the back seat and drive his bike to drop him at the Missionary of Charity. On reaching there he found a world altogether different from the commercial hospital where he was working. Dr Abhisekh keep on visiting every week to render free service to the patients of Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation, Ulatpur. But once it so happened while riding a bike in Bhubaneswar this doctor met with an accident. He was in comma and was bed ridden for a considerable time. Then he thought he might have given a new lease of life by the almighty to serve a greater cause. Instead of working in a commercial hospital he set to serve the neglected people who belongs to the lower rungs of the society.

In the year 2015 he registered THEE Trust at Pipli of which he is one of the founding members. They purchased three acres of land and constructed 5,000 sq. feet built-up area. His sister returned from England to join this mission. She was working as a faculty at Oxford University. It is ranked as the 4th top Unversity in the world. She not only left this lucrative but a glorious job altogether to return her country India to serve the mankind.

In June 2018 he took the drastic step to leave Som Hospital and joined as a Senior Resident at Swami Vivekananda National Institute of Rehabilitation (SVNIR), Ulatpur. Dr. Abhisekh left a lucrative corporate job and joined this hospital which is operated by Ministry of Social Welfare and Justice. It is worth noting this doctor has downgraded his career graph at the prime time of his life. As a consequence his income fell sharply fell below 50 percent. His father resisted for the abrupt step that was taken by this visionary, but his wife stood by him. She said she will sacrifice her personal comforts for the greater cause of the society.

Under the umbrella of Thee Trust
which he is running until now they have procured 40 advanced wheel chairs that are manufactured by Motivation India, a company of UK. Those were funded by Ganga Trust of Bangalore. Its run by Mr.Vaidyanathan who himself is a member of Spinal Foundation of India. He was the Finance Director of The Hindu Group of publications. But destiny had something else written for him. In the year 1992 that noble man met with an accident and had spinal injury. He thought to dedicate his rest of his life for a good cause. Ever since that man is doing whatever possible for the welfare and to rehabilitate people with spinal cord injury.

In the past three and half years they have conducted around 200 major surgeries of leprosy, gangrene with diabetes foot, osteomyelitis, pendon transfer and so on. Every father and mother in India wants their children to be doctors, so that they can be able to lead a dignified life with rich life style. But rendering services to the mankind is the motive of this doctor. Though Maharastra has reared him, but he is serving a distance state Odisha altogether.
