Abinash Padhan : Light, Camera and Action

The education or the career that most of we had chosen was something that has been imposed by our parents. As a consequence of which in qualitative terms we unable to grow in life as we work in a field where our personal interests mismatch with the work that we do. Often it caused disaster in the topography of our career. Field of your work should be something that should be chosen by you yourself.  And rare are those who take the courage to follow their own instinct. Abinash Padhan of Dungripali is such a young man who dares to follow his dreams.

Despite being graduated with a degree in engineering he opt to follow a vocation which is prone to career risks. Abinash was born at Rampur of Sonepur district of Odisha. His father was a Village Level Worker(VLW) and was working at the grass root level of Panchayat, whereas his mother was a upper primary school teacher. He attended Oriya school up to Standard Fifth under the stewardship of his mother. He was always under the strict purview of his mother’s eye, let it be  at home or be it in school. He finally got the liberty to be a prankster only on passing out from primary  school. 

On passing out 10^th he joined +2 Science  at Government Autonomous College, Rourkela. But when he entered college he faced the wrath of raging in the college. He unable to bear the cruelty of the senior students of that government college and returned home. That episode of his life taught him how tough it is to lead life on this planet. The following year he joined a private college by the name Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Science (VSSIS) at Sambalpur and completed his 12^th Standard. He appeared for the JE(Joint Entrance) Exams and qualified in it. He joined Govt. College of Engineering at Bhabanipatna, Kalahandi. He choose mechanical engineering. On acquiring the engineering degree he went to Hyderabad to work in a manufacturing company. But in a year he returned home to resume his studies. 

In 2014 he enrolled for M.Tech in production engineering at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Technology (VSSUT). While pursuing his Masters in production engineering he started fiddling with his cell phone. As if a Romeo he used to sing songs and record them in his cell phone. He sang a song “re mana tu bhala pauchu” and remixed it with music. This song went viral in the college campus and his DJ got instantly recognised by all the lover boys of VSSUT. He became a talk of the town, though in his personal life he was a looser in love and romance episodes. As a young man Abinash fell in love with a girl. As it happen with the majority of people, he was turned down. Without any remorse he says he would not have composed the song if that girl would have ever accepted his proposal. In case that girl had accepted him as on this date Abinash would have become a   machine operator in a factory and working in a sift basis every day instead of producing films.

While pursuing M.Tech he got an opportunity to assist anOriya film director by the name Biswanath Ratha, who produces documentaries on social issues. While working with him he learnt all the nuances of film production. Abinash revered him as Dronacharya the Guru of Pandava’s. During his student days Abinash ventured out to produce films under the banner of Old Tradition Films.

The first short film that Abinash made independently was “God’s own people”. It was a documentary on the plight of leprosy patients of Hatipali village. Leprosy is that contagious disease which has now confined only to tropical Africa and Asia. It affects the skin, mucous membranes, and nerves. It causes lumps on the skin and amputates limbs over the time.

The other subject on which he made a documentary was on a bicycle mechanic of Burla by the name Arun Mishra. Both father and mother of Arun were doctors in VIMSAR, Burla. During the 60’s of the last Century in a car accident both his parents expired. Arun became an orphan. But the medical students of  VIMSAR kept that boy in the hostel and did the upbringing of Arun. And that boy survived in this fierce planet. Now Arun Mishra is working as a cycle mechanic at Burla.

The other documentary Old Tradition Films made was Uwansar Janha. This documentary was on prostitution, a subject which any civilised society hesitate to speak about. But gradually he observed making documentaries on social issues are not commercially viable. To be self sustainable he ventured out to make commercial ad films. He has been introduced by this blogger with TJ Tyres of Bangalore. Abinash and his crew produced three advertising films for the puncture free and burst preventive two wheeler tyres of TJ brand.

That apart he made an ad film for Bhubaneswar based ACADJEE coaching institute which imparts training to the aspirants of medical and engineering students. He is currently working on a documentary funded by Tata Trust Foundation.  

He works with a Bhubaneswar based NGO by the name Siksha Sandhan as a Resource Person. He invigilates the education system of tribal children of Raigada, Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts. He survives solely from the salary that he gets from the job. He says there is no money to earn from the film production on social issues that too of tribal and downtrodden people of the society. He got lot many brilliant ideas in mind but lack the finance to give a concrete shape to his dreams.
